Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Kent Downs AONB and its host authority, Kent County Council, have experience with working with regional organisations on anti-flooding and climate change adaptation responses. A series of sites have been identified were "soft" Natural Flood Management (NFM) responses could be effective. More work however is needed to work with land owners and develop an integrated NFM response programme for the region.

During the Winter of 13/14 several communities endured damaging flood events. The resulting damage brought into focus the need for better approaches to manage flood risk. There is new recognition that mitigating flood risk cannot be achieved solely by building 'hard' defences. The benefit of this project to KCC is to provide the opportunity to identify, design, pilot and monitor new techniques in collaboration with land managers and citizens for the first time.
